Choose the machine for the work, not the hype

Before choosing a host, list what your agent will do. Calling a model API, processing text, and running a scheduled integration are different workloads from automating a Mac application or running a model locally.

OpenClaw documents Linux server hosting, including a gateway on the server and access from another device. A Mac is therefore an option, not a universal prerequisite. Start with the applications and permissions your workflow needs, then pick the operating system.

A hosted model and a locally running model also have different requirements. When requests go to a model provider, the host is coordinating work; model/API charges remain separate. If you want local inference, check the specific model, runtime, memory, and performance expectations. A Mac mini label alone is not a capacity plan.

When a Linux VPS makes sense

A Linux VPS is worth considering for a gateway and integrations that do not depend on macOS. It can keep work running independently of your personal laptop and gives you a server environment to administer.

That does not make it maintenance-free. You still need an update strategy, access controls, backups, and a way to notice failures. Compare the full service: a self-managed VPS and an application-managed hosting plan assign those jobs differently.

OpenClaw also describes pairing local nodes with a remote gateway. That can separate a hosted gateway from device-specific capabilities. Evaluate the trust and connection requirements before assuming everything must live on the same machine.

When a cloud Mac earns its place

Choose a Mac when the workflow needs Mac software, an Apple development environment, or capabilities provided by the macOS companion. The OpenClaw macOS documentation explains its companion app and gateway integration; review the current permissions and setup for the features you intend to use.

Be precise about where the interaction happens. A cloud Mac’s desktop is not your personal laptop’s desktop. A remotely hosted machine does not automatically gain access to local files, cameras, or devices. Any pairing or access must be deliberately configured.

Secure the agent before connecting real accounts

Follow the official security guidance. Keep management access private where practical, use authentication, and grant only the tools and credentials needed for the job. A dedicated machine is not a substitute for these controls.

  • Start with a test workspace and accounts with limited permissions.
  • Keep agent credentials separate from your personal browser profile and password manager.
  • Require human review for consequential actions such as payments, deletion, or publishing.
  • Review third-party skills and integrations before enabling them.
  • Back up state and configuration, and test recovery without exposing secrets.

Do not treat text found in a message or web page as permission to perform an action. External content can contain malicious instructions. Decide in advance which operations the agent may perform and how you will stop it if it behaves unexpectedly.

Run a small pilot before committing

Choose one representative task with a clear success condition. Measure memory use, task duration, API usage, and the effort needed to recover from a restart. Run it without production credentials first, then introduce access gradually.

Use the results to decide whether you need a larger Mac, a simpler VPS, or a managed application service. Do not pay for hardware headroom that the workflow cannot use; equally, do not choose a small plan that leaves no room for its actual processes.
